Uninsured motorist coverage (UM) is a type of car insurance that protects you in the event you're involved in an accident with a driver who doesn't have insurance, or in some cases, with a driver who has insufficient insurance to cover your damages. It can also provide protection if you're involved in a hit-and-run accident where the at-fault driver is unidentified.
Uninsured motorist coverage typically includes two key components:
Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury (UMBI): Covers medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages if you or your passengers are injured in an accident caused by an uninsured driver.
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage (UMPD): Covers damage to your vehicle and other property if an uninsured driver is at fault in the accident. This may not be available in all states, and some states might require you to carry a different type of coverage, such as collision, to cover property damage in these situations.
UM coverage is optional in Arkansas but it can come in handy if your involved in a situation where the other party doesn't have insurance. Talk to your agent today about whether this coverage makes sense for you or if you need to add it to your auto insurance policy.
